Within a Mile of Edinburgh

Baritone Malcolm Green joins John Kitchen in a sprightly drawing-room concert from eighteenth-century Scotland, with folk songs from Robert Burns and The Scots Musical Museum and the sets of fortepiano variations they inspired. Includes premiere recordings of works by J.C. Bach and J.L. Dussek.

"A generous, attractive programme"

"The result is a delightful programme of melodies and melodic invention performed with refinement by baritone Malcolm Greene and pianist and organist John Kitchen on fortepiano, a somewhat clangorous precursor of the pianoforte which lends a suitably authentic late 18th century flavour to the material. Highlights include Neil Gow’s lively “Loch Eroch Side”, the sombre “Roslin Castle” and the tender, traditional “Yellow Hair’d Laddie” whose variations by J C Bach are the most musically substantial – but even the more lightweight confections are a treat."

INVERNESS COURIER

"In the songs, Malcolm Green reveals a pleasing timbre and attractive manner, though his final consonants and Scots accent leave something to be desired. That excellent player John Kitchen vanquishes the occasional recalcitrance of the piano, phrases beautifully, and his cogent shaping of Ross's extensive variations on Busk ye, is all one could wish for."
