Charles Wood: Songs for Voice & Piano

Limited Edition: 500 CDs available worldwide

Secure in his reputation as a mainstay of Anglican church music, Charles Wood reveals a deeper, more versatile talent in his secular songs. Drawing on rich literary influences – from Christina Rossetti to Walt Whitman – as well as a profound interest in the Irish cultural revival, and balancing delicate lyricism with rich harmonic textures, Wood conjures an intricate landscape of emotional and intellectual depth.

For Carolyn Dobbin’s third album on Delphian, she is joined by masters of British song Roderick Williams and Iain Burnside in heartfelt performances that give vivid life to these evocative works.

“An excellent introduction to the songs of Charles Wood … I love the spirit in which this album has been recorded: a Northern Irish singer supporting a compatriot composer … ‘O Captain! My Captain!” offers a wonderfully dramatic rolling gesture to start the day: you really feel you’re in safe hands with these musician’s performances … it’s so encouraging that over half the songs on this album are world premieres: it shows the wider heritage of British song that we can be proud of … Carolyn Dobbin makes such a beautiful warm sound; there’s something you just don’t want to let go of – we could listen to those songs all day: the balance that Delphian gets is wonderful because Wood’s Brahmsian piano writing is so immediate; it’s big writing”
