Building Castles: Live Music Now Scotland celebrates 40 years

Limited Edition: 350 CDs available worldwide

Bringing together specially commissioned music from five Scottish composers, this album builds on the similar collection released on Delphian ten years ago to celebrate Live Music Now Scotland’s 30th anniversary. LMNS’s unique approach to commissioning new music fulfils the organisation’s twin aims of supporting early-career artists with professional performing experience and at the same time widening access to high-quality live music for people living in challenging circumstances, including children with additional support needs and older people in care.

The first volume was described by BBC Record Review’s Andrew McGregor as ‘a lovely showcase’ for the composers and musicians involved and for Live Music Now’s important work; Delphian is proud to ally with the organisation again in this exceptional endeavour.

"I encourage readers to visit Live Music Now Scotland's website in order to learn more about an interesting organisation that has some unusual and fascinating features. I also encourage them, very warmly, to acquire this lovely disc ... I think that Jennifer Martin’s two pieces, in spite of the technical challenges they present, will be particularly satisfying to get to know and to play. Clarinettist, Calum Robertson, and pianist, Juliette Philogene, do them full justice. Both pieces explore the theme of motherhood. Bi-Cycle begins with a very affecting, rocking lullaby, and the titles of the movements that follow, ‘Haywire’, for instance, give a fair indication of what to expect. ‘Hammer and Tongs’, though, sounds like good-natured banter to this listener ... The final work in the programme, Songs from Above and Below, grew out of a project supported by the Baring Foundation, an independent organisation that provides financial support in the form of grants and whose values turn around human rights, inclusion, discrimination and disadvantage. John McLeod’s composition was part of a programme entitled ‘Late Style’ which supported artists over 70. McLeod produced a song-cycle to his own texts on the subject of the mining industry ...  Songs from Above and Below is, to be sure, a serious and sombre work, challenging for the listener, as well as, no doubt, for the artists. It receives a magnificent performance here from Emily Mitchell and Geoffrey Tanti"

Young composer Erin Thomson captures the thrills and spills of an exhilarating activity [in The Graceful Art of Walking on Stilts] in a way which also draws a young audience into the possibilities of music making through the soaring, tinkling and percussive sounds of the instruments ...Two works on the CD preserve memories of Scotland’s industrial past. Harpist Savourna Stevenson was commissioned to write ‘Mill Memories’ a seven minute work for flute and guitar as part of Paisley’s 2021 bid to be European City of Culture and commemorates the work of mill workers there and in Lancashire where all four of the composer’s grandparents worked in the mills. A bustling start mimicking the continual movement of the machinery is followed by an exotic melodic section, perhaps a nod to the famous Paisley pattern, originally copied from Indian patterns. In 1929, Paisley was the site of the largest ever cinema fire in Europe when 71 children were killed, and an elegiac passage recalls this tragedy. Leila Marshall, flute and Sasha Savaloni, guitar are sensitive to all the changes of mood in the music ... "
