Bartolotti: Di Chitarra Spagnola

Only 25 items left

Italian by birth, Bartolotti was employed as a musician at the enlightened court of Queen Christina of Sweden and in the opulent splendour of the Sun King’s Versailles. His elegant suites for guitar and theorbo fuse contemplation and virtuosity, distilling the melancholic beauty of the French Baroque. Largely neglected in modern times, this cosmopolitan composer’s music nonetheless occupies a seminal place in the early guitar repertory, and Gordon Ferries is an ideal exponent.

"His imagination and commitment shine throughout the album, both in his technically assured performances and the informative, self-penned programme notes...The theorbo pieces - where the instrument's unfretted bass strings ring like a peal of bells - are particularly attractive"

"One finds Italian exuberance tempered by French grace; delicate plucking punctuated by fiery, percussive strumming...The wonderful Passacaglie in G minor...allow[s] Ferries to display the full range of both his and Bartolotti's artistry in one compact package."
