The Choir of Merton College’s latest release has been named Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice in its April edition, ahead of the album release on 29 March 2019.
Interweaving texts from the four Gospels and King James Bible, as well as those by T.S Eliot and Edmund Blunden, Jackson’s major new work forms a centrepiece of the Merton Choirbook project – conceived to mark the 750th anniversary of Merton College, Oxford.
In this premiere recording, Gramophone Magazine praises the singers under the direction of Benjamin Nicholas and players of the Oxford Contemporary Sinfonia, as well as soloists Emma Tring and Guy Cutting, calling the work ‘an effective, emotionally charged contemporary Passion’.
